When OSINT Isn't Great for Us
The objective of this module is to highlight a few things that does not get talked about enough. In this module we are going to identify the types of media exposure that can be vicariously distressing or traumatic, describe possible negative effects of exposure to gruesome, violent or sexually explicit media and review ideas for self-care and “self-preservation”.
When OSINT isn't great for us?
Sometimes during the course of our work on the internet or within operational environments we may be exposed to disturbing content.
Even incidental or episodic exposure to such material may be unnerving and can cause distress - this can sometimes be called vicarious trauma.
Remote working and flexible work environments, we can feel alone in coping with distress – it is even more important to highlight the issues of witnessing confronting material.
Why does this matter?
The level of exposure a staff member experience to objectionable media will vary depending on the role. Nevertheless, any exposure may have negative consequences to the health of someone.
When not acknowledged or proactively managed, even incidental exposure to distressing content can have negative consequences on our mates, employees, their relationships, work performance, and their lives.
